Effects and timeline of Atlantis truffles

Updated

Atlantis truffles change perception, thinking and mood for four to six hours. The first effects arrive after 20 to 60 minutes, the strongest part lies in the first two hours, and the rest is a slow descent. Below is what that usually looks like, based on Dutch harm reduction information and the patterns that recur in published experience reports.

What psilocybin does in the body

After you swallow the truffles, the liver converts psilocybin into psilocin. Psilocin acts on serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, especially in the cortex. That is the same mechanism behind LSD and mescaline, which is why the three feel related despite their differences in length and character. Psilocybin is not physically addictive, and tolerance builds so quickly that taking it on consecutive days has little effect.

Hour by hour

Time after eatingWhat usually happens
0:20 to 1:00Restlessness, yawning, a heavy or queasy stomach, colours look brighter
1:00 to 2:30The peak: moving patterns, distorted sense of time, thoughts that branch off, strong emotions
2:30 to 4:00Effects come in waves and gradually soften; conversation gets easier again
4:00 to 6:00Afterglow, tiredness, often a need to talk or write things down
Next dayMost people feel normal, some feel flat or tired

The timing depends on how full your stomach is, how the truffles were prepared, your body and the batch. On an empty stomach the onset is faster and more abrupt. As tea, the onset is faster still.

Physical effects

The body feels the trip before the mind does. Common effects are dilated pupils, a slightly raised heart rate and blood pressure, chills or warmth, relaxed or heavy muscles, yawning and nausea. Almost everyone feels some form of "body load", a heavy or restless feeling in the body, especially in the first hour (DRUGSinfo). It passes. Lying down, fresh air and small sips of water help more than fighting it.

Perception

At a moderate dose, colours become more saturated, surfaces seem to breathe, and patterns in wood, fabric or leaves start to move. With eyes closed, many people see geometric shapes or dreamlike scenes. Music changes noticeably: people describe hearing separate instruments they never noticed, or feeling music physically. Time stretches, and ten minutes can feel like an hour.

Atlantis is generally described as balanced between visual and mental effects. At the doses most people take, it rarely produces the full loss of surroundings that very strong strains or high doses can cause.

Thinking and mood

Thoughts become associative and jump between ideas. Familiar situations can look new or strange, which is often funny and sometimes unsettling. Emotions get louder in both directions. Many people describe long stretches of laughter, a feeling of connection with friends or nature, or sudden clarity about a personal matter. Others meet sadness or old memories. Neither is a sign that something went wrong.

Anxiety is the most common difficult effect. It usually comes from resisting the experience, an unsafe or chaotic environment, or a dose that was too high. The safety page explains how to handle it.

Set and setting

The same dose can feel completely different depending on your state of mind (set) and your surroundings (setting). Calm, rested, with one or two people you trust, in a familiar place or quiet nature: these are the conditions under which most experiences go well. Crowds, strangers, alcohol, stress at work or at home, and the pressure to "make it count" are the usual ingredients of a hard day.

A sober person nearby is the single most useful precaution, especially the first time.

Afterwards

You are not sober when the visuals stop. Judgement and reaction time stay affected for a while, so plan to stay home for the evening. Driving after truffles is dangerous and illegal in the Netherlands. Sleep can come late. Eat something light, drink water, and give yourself a quiet next morning.
